Surviving in a World Full of Lies

Lies. Lies. And more lies. How are we going to survive in a world where it’s becoming harder and harder to find the truth? Who can we even believe anymore?

I was always taught to trust God’s Word as the absolute truth. After all, Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Matthew 24:35, NIV).

I still believe truth can be found in God’s Word to us, but too often it gets lost in our interpretation of it. God never intended His Word to be used as a rigid rulebook that creates dogma which could be errant, divisive, judgmental, unloving, and even damaging to people.

Sadly, the Bible has been used countless times throughout history to justify and perpetuate the oppression of certain groups of people—simply because they didn’t fit into someone’s interpretation of it.

Finding Truth in a Sea of Lies

As truth seemed to elude me in my journey, I found myself discouraged. Anxiety robbed me of peace, and fear challenged my faith. Without being dramatic, I felt lost in a sea of lies, wondering if the truth could ever really be found.

In our course What LIES Between Us, we are taught to Reflect, Rethink, and Reach:

  • Reflect on what we have been taught.
  • Rethink what needs to change.
  • Reach for a plan to move forward.

I love that! It may not be easy, but it is necessary.

Your plan may look different than mine, but let me share what helped me—hoping it may help you, too.

I chose the Bible as my guidepost, but I laid down all the things I thought I had figured out. I determined to draw new conclusions only after filtering them through God’s love for us. I found people I could share my questions with—without fear of rejection. I left behind the pressure of having to know all the answers right away and accepted the reality that truth doesn’t always reveal itself quickly.

I also started listening to the Holy Spirit more closely.
“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth” (John 16:13, NLT).

Lies often sound appealing because they are mixed with partial truths. But the Holy Spirit gives discernment, revealing what’s false even when it’s subtle. A simple prayer helps: “Holy Spirit, help me see and love Your truth.”

Finding Community On the Journey

I broadened my community and found others who were wrestling with the same questions I was. Instead of pretending we had everything figured out, we began to wrestle honestly with our so-called truths. And in that struggle, we started to uncover what we had all been longing for. When I climbed out of my personal box of dogma, some incredible people showed up in my life—I hope they will in yours, too.

Finally, let me encourage you on this journey: we may never get everything figured out, but at least we have each other. Let your love for God and for others guide you through the confusion. Remember, lies may make life difficult, but in the end, truth will always prevail.

“For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened” (Matthew 7:8, NLT).
