#humansofbrownicity @carolehardingMy journey with Brownicity and the ‘What Lies Between Us’ course began because I have many family members of different hues who at different times shared with me how they were treated in school and the community. In my whiteness and ignorance, I assumed that they were misunderstanding otherpeople’s intentions. Over time something around their words and experiences began to weigh on my heart, something did not feel right in my soul. I had the opportunity to take the ‘What Lies Between Us’ course, which opened my eyes to the lies we’ve been told, to the incomplete history we learn and how easy it is for people who look like me to believe we know everything we need to know about race and racism in the United States.Today, I have better eyes on what’s happening in my community and am better able to engage where it’s appropriate. I understand better the experiences my children and grandchildren describe, and I believe them. Brownicity and the WLBU course have been life and mind changing for me. The WLBU course and all of the resources on Brownicity have given me a wealth of information and challenged my thinking in the best ways. I’m so grateful to have found the course and the website. I’m grateful to Dr. Lucretia Carter Berry for creating the WLBU course and Brownicity. She is an amazing leader and educator. I have been able to promote the course in my area and am honored to be a certified instructor. I look forward to the many ways that this course and the Brownicity web site will allow me to help reach many others so that we all may live in a more just, equitable and safe world. ... #humansofbrownicity @DeLenn Maples I was 48 years old when I first learned that race was a complete construct; 48. I think I thought it had been constructed but I didn’t know how, why and who actually constructed this and when and where it came to fruition.I came upon WLBU through a podcast that I was listening to while cooking dinner. I couldn’t think of anything else and couldn’t wait to be able to find my spot in bed, after my children were asleep, to investigate this curriculum that seemed to be calling out to me. I now know why. I was 48 and had not truly learned half of our nation’s history and I was currently completing my MEd Action-Research project, squarely focused on civic literacy in the USA. In hindsight I was lead to this curriculum to help with vital missing pieces.@Brownicity and the WLBU curriculum made clear what was already in plain sight. Learning about the construct of race, the laws purposefully worded and set into the fabric of our society, and the role that pivotal citizens have played in the current landscape of not only our country, but the world at-large, have turned me into a woman, mom, daughter, and friend that actively creates dialogue that leads to uncomfortable but needed conversations and paths to healing and change. This course and others on @Brownicity have continued to challenge me and grow my knowledge. I’ve enjoyed leading two small groups through WLBU and can’t wait to lead more! ... See MoreSee Less

#humansofbrownicity@emersonrayNot too long ago, I remember telling my family over dinner how “I didn't really feel like I would ever be able to have a real relationship or make deeper connections with someone who had beliefs so different from mine.”I had no idea how wrong I was. This idea that our differences only divide us, is a mindset that plagues the whole world right now. I'll admit, it is not always easy to share your heart with someone whose beliefs might hurt or confuse you. It is hard to choose to love someone even when you disagree with them. By telling myself that I would not pursue connection with people who thought differently than me, and in turn deciding to shut out anyone who didn't align with my values, I was actually being ignorant, and starving myself of great opportunities for connection.I believe we are all products of our experiences, and you cannot change what you have experienced, only learn from others. I haven't changed my beliefs, but it has become freeing to open myself up to all kinds of people. If I were only surrounded by people who thought like me, I would never learn. So every day, instead of putting up walls where there seems to be a divide, I am working on choosing to spread love. I hope that I continue to grow and learn from others, and recognize that difference does not have to be division. ... See MoreSee Less
