A Transformative Antiracism Journey for Kids!

Lucretia Berry  •

Are you a parent or educator who finds it challenging to discuss the important topic of race/ism with kids? Do you wish there was a comprehensive and impactful way to approach this subject without overwhelming children or ourselves? Look no further! Hues of You Summer Camp is here to provide a transformative and gradual antiracism educational experience for children of all ages.

As an educator, I understand the need to break down complex concepts and deliver them in digestible pieces over an extended period. It’s through this developmental process that true learning and growth occur. That’s why I created Hues of You – An Activity Book for Learning About the Skin You Are In. This resource allows adults to support children in building healthy pathways towards diversity, developing appropriate language, and understanding key terms associated with race, ethnicity, and culture. By engaging with the content and activities in this book gradually over time, we can remove the stigma and fear society has attached to discussing race/ism.

Now, imagine taking this empowering journey to a whole new level at our four-day Hues of You Summer Camp! Our camp is designed by educator-moms, Tiffany Trudewind, Tehia Starker-Glass, and me to provide a vibrant and inclusive environment where campers can explore, create, and grow together. From kindergarten to eighth grade, children from different backgrounds come together to learn, encourage one another, and embrace the beauty of our multi-hued world.

Throughout the camp, we engage campers in a variety of exciting activities such as painting, crafts, games, and immersive storytelling. We want to foster respect, understanding, empathy, and connection among our young explorers. Moreover, middle school campers serve as ‘buddies’ to elementary-aged campers, creating a diverse community of learners who inspire and support one another.

At Hues of You Summer Camp, we dive into important topics that shape our understanding of race and diversity. For example, we set the tone for our campers to recognize, name, and honor the beautiful distinctions in phenotypes among individuals. Through empowering “I AM” affirmations, we help children cultivate a positive self-image and embrace their unique identities.

We delve deeper by examining the concepts of race and racism, shedding light on what they truly represent and how they impact our world. We also guide our campers in understanding the difference between justice and equality, substantiating their sense of fairness and the importance of standing up for what is right.

Each day at Hues of You Summer Camp is filled with excitement and growth. We create an inclusive space where campers can freely express themselves and engage in meaningful conversations. As the days unfold, we witness the transformation of our campers’ perspectives and their growing desire to share their newfound knowledge with others. And of course, each day concludes with a joyous dance party celebration, because at Hues of You Summer Camp, learning is an adventure worth celebrating!

The testimonials from parents speak volumes about the impact of our camp. They marvel at the knowledge their children gain and the wisdom they bring back home, even teaching their parents along the way. For us, the Hues of You Summer Camp is a dream come true – a dream we didn’t even know we had.

So, join us this summer and give your child an unforgettable experience. Together, let’s create a world where every hue is celebrated and cherished, because in embracing our differences, we discover the true beauty of humanity.
